dutch women dancing to hip hop in their living room

Excerpt from "Six To Eight Black Men"
By David Sedaris
full text:
http://people.cornell.edu/pages/bs16/Christmas/6_to_8_black_men.txt

"Is it just him alone?" I asked. "Or does he come with backup?"

Oscar's English was close to perfect, but he seemed thrown by a
term normally reserved for police reinforcement.

"Helpers," I said. "Does he have any elves?"

Maybe I'm just overly sensitive, but I couldn't help but feel
personally insulted when Oscar denounced the very idea as grotesque
and unrealistic. "Elves," he said. "They're just so silly."

The words silly and unrealistic were redefined when I learned that
Saint Nicholas travels with what was consistently described as "six
to eight black men." I asked several Dutch people to narrow it
down, but none of them could give me an exact number. It was always
"six to eight," which seems strange, seeing as they've had hundreds
of years to get a decent count.

The six to eight black men were characterized as personal slaves
until the mid-fifties, when the political climate changed and it
was decided that instead of being slaves they were just good
friends. I think history has proven that something usually comes
between slavery and friendship, a period of time marked not by
cookies and quiet times beside the fire but by bloodshed and
mutual hostility. They have such violence in Holland, but rather
than duking it out among themselves, Santa and his former slaves
decided to take it out on the public. In the early years, if a
child was naughty, Saint Nicholas and the six to eight black men
would beat him with what Oscar described as "the small branch of
a tree."

the best whiskey sour ever

at Studio K tonight.

When I quit advertising & become a sex worker to support my painting habit, I will go by the name of Jolene...

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, jolene

He talks about you in his sleep
Theres nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, jolene

And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you dont know what he means to me, jolene

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can

You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
Hes the only one for me, jolene

I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, jolene

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him even though you can

Antwerp trip planning

Labels Inc, Aalmoezenierstraat 4

This is the best consignment store in Antwerp, right off of Nationalestraat. It’s a great source for hunting pieces from older collections. Tip – they don’t accept credit cards. Another tip – go in the beginning of the season, when they change the merchandise to score the best pieces.

Francis, Steenhouwersvest 14

Another consignment store that has both clothes and furniture. The clothes selection was poor, maybe because it’s a very popular store, so stuff goes quickly.

Servings: Makes 6 servings.

ingredients
6 oz soba (Japanese buckwheat noodles)
1 teaspoon Asian sesame oil
1 medium red bell pepper, cut lengthwise into thin strips
1/2 English cucumber (8 oz), seeded and cut into 1/8-inch-thick matchsticks
1/2 lb jicama (1/2 medium), peeled and cut into 1/8-inch-thick matchsticks

4 scallions, cut into 3-inch-long julienne strips
1 tablespoon seasoned rice vinegar
1/4 teaspoon salt

Toss noodles with sesame oil in a large bowl.

Toss together remaining ingredients in another bowl, then add to noodles and toss again to combine.

Art
Le Corbusier
He's by far the most famous and according to many the most important architect and urban designer of the 20th century, but he was also a painter, sculptor, photographer and textile designer. In this first major retrospective since 1987, more than 450 original drawings, models, paintings, tapestries, films, photographs, sculptures, items of furniture and interiors will be exhibited together to demonstrate the strength and influence of Le Corbusier. Nederlands Architectuurinstituut (Tues-Sat 10.00-17.00, Sun 11.00-17.00), Rotterdam opens Saturday until 2 September

Genesis

Participating artists and scientists include Ad Dekkers, Mark Dion, Edo Dooijes, Erwin Driessens & Maria Verstappen, Charles & Ray Eames, Ed Emschwiller and George Gessert, amongst others. Centraal Museum (Tues-Thur, Sat, Sun 12.00-17.00, Fri 12.00-21.00), Utrecht until 12 August

Rembrandt & a windmill

Rembrandt & a windmill, originally uploaded by Loro Kidul.

I took a 20 minute ride down the West bank of the Amstel on Thursday. The ferryman told me that Japanese tourists come and take lots of pictures of this statue....for some reason.

Sheep

Sheep, originally uploaded by Loro Kidul.

I know that I'm a tourist when I get excited about things like this. Like the first time I saw an Egret. Then I realized they're everywhere, all the time. I'm sure it's the same with sheep. But it's so damn cute! And quaintness like this is just a 20 minute bike ride along the Amstel River!

Tourist Photo Guy, originally uploaded by Loro Kidul.

This is photo guy #2 - I tipped him 2 E for his photo. Joseph told me that he did it too, and that the principal of another agency in Amsterdam put out a book of them. I guess it's pretty obvious.
